On Monday, OpenAI announced the launch of their new, top-notch AI model named GPT-4o, along with a new desktop service and improvements to its voice helper features.

Mira Murati, the Chief Technology Officer, introduced the new model at the OpenAI office amidst cheers from the audience, claiming it as a significant advancement in AI technology. This new version, which was previously only available to paying customers, will now be free for everyone.

Murati mentioned that GPT-4o represents a big change in how we interact with machines.

OpenAI also shared that they’ve made their ChatGPT better and faster at understanding different languages and can now handle images, audio, and text files for analysis. They plan to introduce these features slowly to make sure they are used safely.

During the event, there was a live show where the AI demonstrated its new voice skills by creating a bedtime story about love and robots, and showing how it could solve a math problem using a camera. At one point, the AI even commented on a researcher’s happy facial expression.

Although there were rumors that OpenAI might announce a new search engine to compete with Google, the company’s CEO, Sam Altman, clarified that wasn’t the case, although he hinted at exciting new projects on Twitter.

The demonstration mostly went well, though there were minor issues. While Murati said they are careful about misusing the new voice features, they didn’t provide much information on how they would secure features related to recognizing faces and voices.

Reports suggest that OpenAI is also finalizing a deal to include its AI features in Apple’s iPhone software. Apple is trying to enhance its AI capabilities, potentially giving its Siri a boost compared to OpenAI’s new features.

As OpenAI continues to grow and explore new partnerships, it is also dealing with lawsuits from publishers and media companies who claim the company used their content illegally to train its AI models without permission or payment. These lawsuits could involve large sums of money in damages.
